What Inspires You?
Here I am, a day before doing my 1st humour speech contest after 3 years of being in toastmasters… ever since I said YES to the challenge of one of our fellow toastmaster KL Fong, I’ve been going through such a stretch.
I’ve been avoiding humour speeches for so long… simply because, I’ve been telling myself that I don’t have any humourous story to tell… I’m just not funny. I’m inspiring,… but when it comes to funny — that’s a whole different arena!
Then I remembered what Hanson Lye had said to me when I was doing my 8th prepared speech… he said, he wants to hear an out-of-the-ordinary “for Jacy” speech. And I just knew that he wanted me to do a humour speech for my 10th speech! I’ve been perturbating again…!
And this Money & You flipchart just comes flashing to me…
It’s so tempting to chicken out and come up with all the excuses NOT to do this speech. But I told myself, I’ve made the commitment and said YES, I’ll do it… so now, there’s no turning back! I’m still wondering WHY I said YES in the first place!!!
Then going through my emails… hoping I’ll get some stroke of inspiration — I came across this quote:
“It is never about how good your voice is; it is only about feeling the urge to sing, and then having the courage to do it with the voice you are given.”
– Katie in ‘True to Form’ by Elizabeth Berg
How often have you allowed fear and your inner critic to stop you from doing something you were inspired to do?
One of people I admire most is Helen Keller, and she said,
“Life is either a grand adventure or nothing.”
When we allow fear and criticism to stop us in our tracks, we give up that grand adventure. What a waste!
So, I’ve decided to take this as a grand adventure! I’m going to shock myself tomorrow and everyone else in the room and just have loads of fun!
Hope to see you at M&Y KL Toastmasters - Humourous Speech & Evaluation Contest (24 Sept 2008, 7:00 pm at Globe Success Training Centre, Unit 17-3A, 3rd Mile Square, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur)
It’ll be great if you could come and support by laughing even when it’s not funny!!! Yes, I get points for that! Hahahaha…! If you’re from the Laughter Yoga, come along too and practice especially when I’m speaking
*Hint hint*
